Waitomo Glowworm Caves from Auckland: Which Day Trip Fits?
4 min read
If Waitomo is your main goal, pick a trip built around the caves rather than a Hobbiton combination; if you want both, accept a day of eleven hours or more. On most of these trips the cave visit itself lasts about an hour, so what you are really choosing is how the rest of a long day is filled; the Spellbound tour is the exception.

What the cave visit is
The operator’s page for the Glowworm Caves asks you to allow 45 minutes and lists a boat ride through the glowworm grotto. You must check in 30 minutes before departure or the ticket is forfeited, which matters on a coach day: ask the tour what time it plans to arrive. The site is open from 9am to 5pm, and pre-booking is described as essential. The Spellbound tour does not visit this cave: its listing names the Spellbound Glowworm Caves, a glowworm cave and Te Ana o Te Atua (the cave of the spirit), in a guided experience of 180 minutes with a raft ride under the glowworms.
Fitness and accessibility
The operator describes the cave as suitable for people with reasonable mobility, with handrails and good paths, but also lists stairs, says some areas can be wet and slippery and states there is no wheelchair access. It describes Ruakuri Cave as wheelchair friendly, but the listing for the tour from Auckland that includes Ruakuri says it is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments, claustrophobia or vertigo, or visually impaired people. The Spellbound listing says there are no stairs inside its caves and walks of up to 40 minutes at a time over gentle terrain, but you must step up and down about 40 cm to get in and out of the van and the raft; it cannot take wheelchairs or walking frames and is not suitable for people with back problems or claustrophobia. Bring comfortable shoes and a warm jacket.
Of the five listings, only the Hobbiton combination names an age limit: it is not suitable for children under 4. It also says photography is not allowed where the glowworms are, because they react to flash and switch their lights off. The operator allows photos in selected areas of Ruakuri Cave. Lunch is included only in the Hobbiton combination; on the other trips you buy it during a stop.
Choosing a day
The seven-hour trip is the shortest and the cleanest choice if the glowworms are the aim. The nine-hour Spellbound tour, limited to 11 people, spends the most time underground, about three hours in its two caves, but it is not the Waitomo Glowworm Cave with its well-known boat ride through the grotto. The Ruakuri option suits people who like caves and want a second, different one. The 12-hour trip is the one for animal lovers, because the Kiwi House and Blue Springs are the additions, and it is a long day for children.
Driving yourself
You can drive and buy the cave ticket directly, but then you carry the 30-minute check-in rule and the return drive yourself. If a car also serves a wider North Island route, compare rental cars for Auckland; for one day trip, a tour is the lower-effort option.
Recommendation
If you want the Waitomo Glowworm Cave and its boat ride, pick the seven-hour trip at €139.68, the shortest option. Choose the Spellbound small-group tour at €154.57 if you would rather spend about three hours underground in a smaller group, and the Hobbiton combination at €187.24 if film-set fans are in the group.
