Sky Tower: SkyWalk, SkyJump or SkyRide?
3 min read
Choose the SkyWalk if you want the height and the view, the SkyJump if you want the drop, and the SkyRide if you want both in about 90 seconds. All three are run by AJ Hackett Bungy at the Sky Tower on Victoria Street West, all three include a Sky Tower pass for the observation levels, and all three are for ages 10 and over. The real differences are time, weight limits and how much the experience asks of your nerves.

SkyWalk
The SkyWalk is a walk around a 1.2-metre-wide ledge on the outside of the tower, 192 metres up, with no handrails. You are clipped by a harness to an overhead safety line, groups are up to six people, and the guide may invite you to lean out over the edge. The listing gives 1.5 hours in total; the walk itself is listed as one hour. Its limits are the strictest of the three: at least 10 years old, at least 130 cm tall, between 30 and 127 kg, and not for pregnant women or people with vertigo. You need flat, lace-up, closed shoes, and loose items stay in the free lockers.
SkyJump
The SkyJump is not a free fall but a wire-guided descent in a seated harness from 192 metres, which the listing says takes about nine seconds and gives no gut-drop feeling; you can do it alone or in tandem. The speed is not consistent across the listing: the short description says 95 km/h, a highlight further down says 85 km/h. The weight limits disagree too: the list of exclusions names 35 to 122 kg, while the notes give a maximum of 150 kg per person and 235 kg for a tandem pair. Confirm your weight with the operator if you are near either limit. Allow 45 minutes in total; a photo and video package is included.
SkyRide
The SkyRide pulls you up the outside of the tower in a seated harness at six metres per second, 53 storeys to 192 metres, and then brings you down in a fast controlled descent. The ride itself lasts around 90 seconds, within a 45-minute slot. It is open to people from 35 to 150 kg, is recommended as a tandem ride, and high heels, sandals and open shoes are not allowed. With only 3 reviews so far there is little experience from other travellers to lean on; the other two have more.
Check before you book
All three exclude children under 10, the SkyWalk and SkyJump also pregnant women (the SkyRide page names only the age and weight limits), and the Sky Tower and its experiences are closed on Christmas Day. The SkyWalk and SkyJump pages also rule out alcohol and drugs. Anyone with a serious fear of heights, or who would rather stay indoors, can use the Sky Tower pass on its own and stay on the viewing levels.
Recommendation
For most visitors who want to do something at the top, the SkyWalk at €107.64 is the gentler choice: you stay on a ledge and the view is the point, but check the height and weight limits first. Choose the SkyJump at €165.21 if the descent is what you came for.
