Piha and Auckland's West Coast: Which Black Sand Beach Tour to Book

5 min read

Lion Rock rising from the sand at Piha beach with two people running along the waterline

Book a west coast tour if you want to see Auckland’s wild side in half a day, and pick it by the stops you want, not by the beach names. The tours below all leave from central Auckland and head for black sand, rainforest or a gannet colony, but they cover quite different ground and differ in one practical point: only the Muriwai tour clearly includes lunch.

What each tour is really about

The Piha rainforest tour by Bush and Beach has the most reviews. It starts with the lookout decks in the Waitākere Ranges, about 30 minutes’ drive from the city, with views to the Tasman Sea and Māori carvings, then goes down to the black sand of Piha and on to an easy bush walk among kauri and tree ferns. Groups are up to 16, pickup is from hotels on the operator’s list, and the operator calls it suitable for all fitness levels. Lunch is not included: there is a stop where you can buy food, and a Kiwi-style afternoon tea is part of the tour.

The Kitekite Falls tour by ENZOY adds a walk to a multi-tiered waterfall to the Piha stop, with pickup in the city centre and groups of up to 15. The walks at Piha and at the falls are self-guided within a time limit set by the driver, and the operator says the falls trail needs moderate to good fitness because of stairs, rocks and natural surfaces. It is not recommended for people with back or heart problems or high blood pressure.

The Muriwai tour by Cheeky Kiwi Travel is the one to choose for seabirds and the only one that clearly includes lunch, a set menu at Hallertau Brewery in Riverhead (the beer tasting costs extra). After lunch it visits Muriwai Beach and walks up to what the listing calls the largest mainland gannet colony in the North Island; the operator notes that bird numbers vary through the year. It finishes at North Head in Devonport, with the option of taking the ferry back to the city. Bring a jacket: the operator says Muriwai is often cooler and breezier than the city.

The Bethells Beach and Piha Caves tour by Social Nature Movement is the longest. It visits the Arataki Visitor Centre, Bethells Beach (Te Henga), Piha and the remote beach at Whatipū, with walking on beaches and through caves. Its list of inclusions mentions lunch “unless private”, so confirm that with the operator; the dinner at Tanuki Caves in the city is optional and not included. The listing says it is not suitable for people with limited mobility or claustrophobia.

What is closed on the tracks

Several west coast tracks have been closed or repaired since the storms of 2023. Auckland Council’s track update of May 2026 lists the Lion Rock summit track at Piha as still closed because the storm damage left it unstable, so a tour can show you Lion Rock but not take you up it. Access to Kitekite Falls has been restored, but the council warns that tracks can close temporarily after heavy rain. At Muriwai the council is upgrading the Maukatia Gannet Track and expects temporary closures in the second half of 2026. Track status changes, so check the council’s regional park map before you go, and ask your operator whether the walk in the listing is open on your day.

When a rental car makes sense

A tour takes care of the driving, and you can focus on the views. If you would rather set your own pace at several beaches, or you are also planning a wider North Island route, you can compare rental cars for Auckland. For a single half day, a guided tour is the lower-effort option.

Recommendation

For most visitors the Piha beach and rainforest tour at €105.14 is the clearest choice: half a day, black sand and bush, an easy walk and the most reviews. Choose the Muriwai tour with lunch at €99.63 if the gannets matter more than Piha, or if you want lunch clearly included.
