Hobbiton from Auckland: Day Tour, Waitomo Combo or Self-Drive?
4 min read
For most first-time visitors without a car, the combined Hobbiton and Waitomo day trip is the better use of a long day; choose a Hobbiton-only tour if you want a shorter day, and drive yourself only if the rest of your route runs through the Waikato. The film set is not in Auckland. Tours start at The Shire’s Rest, 501 Buckland Road near Matamata, and Hobbiton’s own planning material puts it about two hours’ drive from Auckland.

What you actually do at Hobbiton
Hobbiton’s own signature tour lasts about two and a half hours, of which the guided walk is around an hour and a half. It includes a short bus ride from The Shire’s Rest to the set, a walk past the hobbit holes of Bagshot Row and a stop at the Green Dragon Inn with a drink. The set can only be visited on a guided tour, so the format is the same whichever trip you pick. One operator describes the walk as about 2 km on gravel paths with gentle slopes and some steps. What changes between the tours is the journey and the rest of the day.
What each ticket includes
All four include Hobbiton entry, the guided tour and the drink at the Green Dragon Inn. The differences are lunch and pickup:
- Hobbiton and Waitomo day trip: hotel pickup in the downtown Auckland CBD only, plus one pickup point at the Sebel Manukau for South and East Auckland; a light Kiwi-style café lunch; entry to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves with a 45-minute guided tour. Not suitable for children under 4.
- Festive-lunch trip: no hotel pickup; you meet the coach at 102 Hobson Street. A buffet lunch in the Party Marquee is included, with dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. The coach takes about 2¼ hours each way and groups can be up to 48.
- Hobbiton small-group tour: pickup from a list of central hotels, snacks and water on board. Lunch is not included; you buy it at The Shire’s Rest. The return to Auckland is at about 7pm.
- Hobbiton and Waitomo small-group tour: pickup from a longer list of hotels, at most 15 guests, lunch from a set menu in Otorohanga (drinks and dessert extra), a stop at a farm with animals and the Waitomo boat ride.
Hobbiton only, or with Waitomo?
The Hobbiton-only trips run eight to nine hours, so about half of the day is spent on the road. The combination adds the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and stretches the day to 11 hours; the caves visit itself is the 45-minute guided tour with a boat ride under the glowworms, and photography is not allowed in the glowworm grotto. The small-group version of the combination runs 13 hours. With young children or if you dislike long coach days, the 13-hour option is a poor choice; the 11-hour combination does not take children under 4, so with a toddler pick a Hobbiton-only trip.
Driving yourself
Driving gives control over timing, but it adds roughly four hours behind the wheel to a day that already includes the walking tour. It makes sense if you are heading on to Rotorua or Taupō anyway. If so, compare rental cars for Auckland and check the excess before you book. For a single return day trip, a tour is simpler.
Recommendation
Choose the Hobbiton and Waitomo day trip at €187.24 if you want both highlights, can accept an 11-hour day and stay in the city centre. Choose the Hobbiton-only trip at €145.69 for a shorter day with lunch included, or the small-group tour at €159.71 if hotel pickup and a smaller group matter more than a lunch in the price.
